I stalked through the dark and winding corridor of the Watchtower, scowling darkly beneath my cowl. For some idiotic reason, all the fluorescents had gone out again. This caused thin shadows to be lurking in the corners of the hall, threatening to surround me completely. It also gave me reason to be suspicious. Everyone was missing from the hallways, leaving them strangely empty. It was the first time that the Watchtower had been so quiet since the Unlimited expansion. The last time that something like this had happened, the other Founding Members had tried to give me a surprise ‘birthday bash’. Of course, Alfred had been in on it.
Needless to say, I hadn’t been amused.
If Wally was up to something, I would have his head. I was already in a relatively bad mood as it was, and if he tried to pull something, it would be the last straw. This had been a very bad day. Not only had Joker escaped from Arkham and tried to blow something up for the fifth time this month, but Diana had clearly been acting strange around me all week long. Every single time that I had tried to approach her, she had made some excuse and rushed away. Today had been no different. And to top that off, J’onn and Wally had been lurking at the time, being painfully obvious about watching the two of us.
That Martian just couldn’t keep his nose out of my affairs. I strongly suspected that Wally was a bad influence.
And now, when I had been trying to research some leads in my private room, my comm. link had started buzzing insistently. Upon reluctantly answering the call, J’onn had asked me to come to the control room right away; it was an emergency. Though I doubted this, I had made my way to the location I was headed for now, wondering what all of them were up to now. Why couldn’t they just leave me alone?
I turned the corner, slowing my movements from brisk and impatient to suspicious yet uninterested. I smoothly stepped forward, moving slowly enough that my cape didn’t even rustle. My movements were completely silent. If J’onn hadn’t been facing the door, apparently waiting for my arrival, I would have been able to escape his notice.
“What is it, J’onn?” I asked him gruffly, ignoring my instincts, which were telling me loudly that something was up. If J’onn was trying to be secretive, it wasn’t working. I could very easily see the small smirk twisting his lips. I could also see Kent, Shayera, Stewart, Terrific, and Wally staring out from behind the conveniently-placed stack of crates piled in the corner. Did they think they were hiding? It wasn’t really working.
“A mission in Metropolis,” J’onn stated calmly, alien orbs gleaming once. He squelched the smirk, leaving his expression cold and emotionless. “Copperhead and Star Sapphire are robbing a bank.”
I stared back at him, coolly thinning my eyes until they were mere slits behind my mask. I kept my gaze in check, refusing to let it flicker to those ‘hiding’ so clearly behind the boxes. “What about Superman? It is his city, after all.”
J’onn shook his head once. “Superman is already on a mission, to Atlantis. Aquaman needed some help with a shark scare,” he intoned, seeming a little too quick to answer.
Was he blind? Couldn’t he see Kent sticking his very large head out from behind those damn boxes?
He must have seen through my emotionless mask to the incredulous doubt that lingered there. “You must hurry, Batman. Sapphire and Copperhead have not yet harmed any innocent civilians, but the risk that they might is very high. I would go myself, but I am currently running twenty-seven active missions.” He turned to the screen and began typing rapidly, pulling several images up onto the screen. I recognized one featuring Green Arrow and Supergirl; they had fought those slime creatures in London last week. It was obvious that these were previous recordings.
What were the seven of them up to? Why were they trying to trick me into going to Metropolis? It was highly surprising that Diana wasn’t in on the scheme. But she didn’t appear to be around, for some reason. I thought of trying to get out of it, making up some excuse about trouble in Gotham that I needed to attend to, but decided against it. They were probably all trying to get rid of me, and I wouldn’t give them the satisfaction of showing my annoyance.
“Fine,” I snapped shortly, turning and sweeping towards the teleporter. I didn’t miss the enthusiastic high-five that the ‘hidden’ West awarded Kent, either. Tightening my lips into a firm line, I strode up the steps and positioned myself in the center of the teleporting pad. Crossing my arms over my chest, I stood stiffly on one of the softly glowing circles. It was almost too easy to see Wally gesturing frantically at J’onn from behind the boxes, red-covered arm moving in a obvious blur of color.
“Transport in approximately ten seconds, Batman,” J’onn announced in his thick accent, bobbing his head once in my direction. I could pick out the smirk crossing his lips once again, and mentally grumbled. Hopefully, this mission wouldn’t take too long. Copperhead was an easy villain to defeat, and Sapphire was almost just as easy.
I felt the familiar sensation of my molecules blurring and crumbling into small fragments, then saw a flash of blue across my vision. It only took about half a second until my vision cleared, and I blinked quickly to adjust my eyes. I didn’t know if my opponents would be waiting for me right off the bat or not, but I had to be ready anyway.
I was completely shocked when my eyes registered the surroundings around me. Instead of downtown Metropolis, with two insane criminals attacking the city, I saw only green. Lush, emerald plants grew up all around me, brightly-colored flowers waving everywhere in the slight breeze. A slightly murky pond lapped at the mud beneath me, and a red and white blanket was spread out a few yards away. A basket was overflowing decoratively with fruit and other food. The Martian had lied to me.
But none of this was what caught my eye. I focused in on the slim figure in the white dress, standing near the blanket. The nearly see-through skirt of the dress fluttered around her legs, and her black locks flowed delicately over her shoulder. Her eyes shone merrily, the sun lightly touching her porcelain skin.
The startled exclamation just wouldn’t stay locked inside my lips. “Diana?”
“Bruce.” The word flowed from her rosy lips, gently caressing my name. My eyes wouldn’t stay away from the dress, hugging her curves and complimenting her lovely features. She came towards me, seeming to dance on the air, hips swaying slightly.
My mouth suddenly felt very dry.

“Where are we?” I demanded, none of the gruffness I had used with the others entering my tone.
She smiled, beautiful lips curving upwards as she looked back at me. “Kansas. Clark recommended the spot to me; it’s somewhere outside of Smallville. Do you like it, Bruce?” She blinked innocently, blue eyes lighting up as brilliantly as her gorgeous smile.
Damn you, Kent, damn you. So this was what he and the others had been up to. They’d been trying to toy with my relationship with Diana. Couldn’t they play with their own potential partners instead of mine?
“Why are we here?” I asked her, tone growing softer as I spoke these words. “I…I thought there was a mission in Metropolis.”
Diana showed me her flawless white teeth in a teasing laugh. “That was just a decoy, to get you on the teleporting pad.” She leaned forward, as though confiding a secret with me. “The others thought that it was about time for us to do something together. Wally told me that it was time for our first date.”
My eyes narrowed dangerously. So it had been Wally. “We’ve been on…dates before.” I only hesitated for half a second before speaking the word, the one that would take the fear out of all criminals that cowered from the Bat of Gotham.
She leaned forward, running one finger lightly against my jaw. I suppressed a shiver. “The time when we went with J’onn to stop the Imperium, when you almost got killed, does not count as a first date,” she declared. I opened my lips to speak, but she kept on talking. “Neither does the time when all of the others came with me to the future, and the only time I saw you was as the leader of a group of vigilantes against Vandal Savage. Neither does the time when you saved me from that missile in Gorilla City. Or the time when I was possessed by vengeful snake creatures.” A small shudder ran through her, and I longed to comfort her, to take her in my arms.
I thought of Gorilla City, recalling when I had first realized my growing feelings for her. The first time that I had known that I loved her, Princess Diana of the Amazons. When she had risked her life for the apes that had been imprisoning her, been buried under than giant missile. I had been absolutely sure that she was dead…
“Another time that doesn’t exactly count was that time that we teamed up to help Princess Audrey with her Vandal Savage problem.” She tapped one finger against her lips thoughtfully, the gesture sending chills up my spine. “Also, when we took Clark his birthday presents at the Fortress once. Hera, remember that awful Black Mercy creature?”
I nodded once, briskly, not speaking. I didn’t like to think about what had happened that night. Not only had Mongul nearly killed Diana, but I had been attached to the Black Mercy myself. Living the deaths of my parents once had been bad enough; twice had been a nightmare for me.
She seemed to be having fun, trying to think of more opportunities to use against me. “Let’s see…does the time when Morgaine le Fey changed us into children count?” she asked playfully.
“No,” I responded quickly.
“I suppose the time that you sung for Circe and Zatanna to rescue me counts, then.”
I decided not to answer this; I didn’t enjoy reliving this memory, either.
She was the one smirking now. “And not that it wasn’t fun helping Lex and the Society against Darkseid, but I also don’t think that it counted as a date…”
“Alright. I get your point, Diana,” I said quickly, before she could think of even more examples in recent times. “Though I believe that we did kiss once, in that restaurant on our way to Gotham,” I reminded her coyly, my own lips curving.
Her expression was musing. “Yes, I suppose you’re right, Bruce. That did sort of seem like a date, despite the fact that angry Thanagarians were chasing us.”
“It made the situation more…interesting.”
“Right.”

“You know, we never did get to finish that dance in Paris.” She moved even closer, pressing her body lightly up against mine. It felt like every nerve inside my body was tingling, and I tried in vain to ignore that fact. “And you keep promising me that we will, someday.”
“What’s your point?” I was angry to hear my voice come out slightly breathless, cursing myself silently.
“My point is that this seems to be the perfect time to make good on that little promise of yours.” Moving slowly and gracefully, she lifted one hand towards my face. Her beautiful fingertips brushed against the rough skin of my lower face, dangerously close to my lips, then gripped carefully at the edges of my cowl. Using both hands now, she lifted the material from my face, letting it drop lifelessly at my back.
I blinked letting my eyes adjust to the sparkling sunlight, then turned on my playboy charm. A crooked smile twisted my lips, and I nearly expected Diana to swoon. She was staring up at me with glittering, star-struck eyes. “Shall we dance, Diana?” I asked her softly, voice husky as I spoke the question.
She batted her thick eyelashes once, then took a step back. My hands clenched into fists for a moment as I fought the urge to reach out and roughly jerk her back against me. “I would love to dance with you, Bruce,” she breathed quietly, reaching out once more with both hands. She clasped her fingers against mine, throat working a little as she swallowed hard.
I took a step backwards, taking her with me, and we fell into the rhythm of a silent song. It didn’t matter that we were somewhere in the back woods of Kansas, not in a ballroom filled with glittering lights. It didn’t matter that not a note of romantic music was filling the air, or that chirping birds instead surrounded us. It didn’t even matter that J’onn, Wally, Kent, and the others had forced us into this ‘date’ together, and were probably watching us right then. All that mattered was that Diana and I were there together. I was completely lost in her eyes.

“Come on, Bruce,” she finally said, pulling me towards the blanket spread across the grass. I grimaced slightly, thinking of what Joker or Penguin would say if they could see the fierce Batman sitting down for a picnic with Wonder Woman, then reluctantly followed her to the blanket. She dropped down on one corner of it, absently smoothing her dress out with one hand. I caught a glimpse of a pale thigh, and quickly tore my eyes away.
“What do you have planned for us now?” I asked her wryly, cocking one eyebrow as I dropped down right beside my Princess. “Are we going to eat?” I could think of other things we should do, but quickly banished these thoughts.
“Of course,” Diana told me angelically, nodding once. “Alfred made this for us, you know,” she added calmly, reaching for the basket. “He let me pick the food, then help him make it. He also told me that you have a weakness for carrot cake.” She smiled over at me wickedly.
I pursed my lips. So Alfred had been involved with Kent, Wally, J’onn, and the others. It made sense. My elderly butler meddled far too much in things that didn’t involve him. He was worse than Dick, and that was really saying something. Every time that I even turned around, one of them was up to something, and usually with a member of the League. “Oh he did, did he,” I replied flatly, making it a statement instead of a question. Mentally, I came up with a few plans for getting revenge.
“Don’t get mad, Bruce,” she stated seriously, nearly choking as laughter tried to swallow her words. “Alfred was only trying to help. I asked him to, really.”
“Right.”
She reached into the basket, opening the wicker flap. Her hand vanished inside, then came back out holding a plastic bowl. It was full of juicy, plump strawberries. They were nearly the color of her beautiful lips. “Would you like some strawberries, Bruce?” She batted her eyelids at me again, and I cleared my throat.
Why did she have to keep doing that?
“I thought that dessert was supposed to come after the meal, Princess,” I remarked casually.
“I think that we can make an exception, just this once,” she declared with assurance, popping open the lid with a casual twist of her wrist. Pinching a red strawberry between two fingernails, she lifted it from inside the container. Smirking for what felt to me like the millionth time, she leaned slowly towards me. “Want a bite?” she murmured seductively, acting very un-Amazonian. I knew that her mother would be ashamed if she could see her daughter acting like this, around a man.
I leaned to meet her, resisting the urge to brush my lips against her forehead instead of taking the edible fruit that she offered. Taking a deep breath, I bit down on the strawberry. Tangy flavor flooded my taste buds as I chewed the tasty morsel, never taking my eyes from Diana’s as I did so. I relished the color that flooded her pale cheeks, then watched as she finally looked at the ground. Her upbringing was too much for her to resist sometimes.
Swallowing, I reached into the container that she still held. I noticed that her hand was shaking slightly as mine brushed against hers. Warmth shot up my arm, but I fought deperately not to show it in my expression. “Your turn, Princess.” I pinched a strawberry between the tips of two fingers, then lifted it up to meet her rosy lips. These lips brushed against my fingers as I gently pushed the fruit between them.
She lowered her eyelids halfway, adjusting the skirt of her dress over her legs. The sunlight glistened off her marble skin, and I worked hard to stay focused on her beautiful face. She swallowed, then leaned closer still to me. I could feel her breath against my face, and I also swallowed, though more from uncharacteristic nervousness. If Wally and the others were trying to watch by camera, and wanted to blackmail me with this later, I was going to go after them all.
“I…Bruce…” she murmured, as though not sure what exactly to say next. It was strange, and slightly amusing, to see the Amazonian warrior acting this way.
“What is it, Diana?” I asked her in a quiet voice, cocking one eyebrow as I waited.

“I…will you…” She lowered her eyes to stare at the ground, biting down hard on her lip. She was so embarrassed that I suddenly became concerned. Why was she acting this way? Was something wrong?
“Just tell me, Diana,” I ordered her fiercely, reaching forward and taking her chin in my hand. I slowly moved her head so that her blue eyes were focused back on mine again. “Don’t be afraid,” I breathed, trying to calm her down.
“Shayera said that I should ask you something…” She blushed, and quickly tried to look away again. I kept my grip gentle but firm, not allowing her to.
“Ask me what?”
“To…to…to kiss me,” she unexpectedly blurted out. I was so shocked that I dropped my hand from her face. “She told me that all men wanted to kiss the woman they date, and that it would be…appropriate.”
I remembered testingly what it had felt like to kiss Diana, so many years before. It had been utterly amazing. I had melted into her embrace, despite the fact that several Thanagarians had been chasing us at the time. I had even forgotten about all the people that we had been putting in danger by letting them house us, lying to the deadly hawkpeople. I shook my head briskly, trying to clear these thoughts. “Diana, I’m not going to take advantage of you, if that’s what you mean,” I told her firmly.
She blushed again, looking away. “I…the problem is…” She bit down on her lip again, even harder this time. I was worried that she would hurt herself, would draw blood. When she spoke again, her voice was toned so low that I was forced to strain to correctly overhear the words. “The problem is…that I want you to.”
I suppressed a chuckle. She was so innocent, so beautiful. Her innocence only attracted me to her even more. “Are you sure?” I leaned as close to her as I possibly could, blinking slowly. I heard her breathing speed up, and she lurched towards me.
“Yes, yes. I want you to,” she gasped out, breathing rough and ragged. She wrapped her arms around my neck, hard enough that I knew I would have bruises the next day, and gently touched her lips to mine.
I was careful with her, making sure not to hurt her as our lips moved in synchronization. I must admit that I moaned once, but that was to be expected. Not many men get to actually kiss an Amazon.
She finally pulled away from me, a blissful look crossing her face. I could see every emotion written out in her shining eyes, and across her features. I felt the same way, and didn’t once think about how it would seem to anyone watching if they saw the same look across my own face.

“I love you, Bruce,” she whispered quietly, leaning her body against mine. She sighed softly, letting her eyelids flutter closed. She had the face of an angel, and I couldn’t stop staring at her lovely face. She was so beautiful, a powerful Wonder Woman. She was from an island with no men, trained to hate them with every fiber of her being. So how did I become so lucky, gaining her love? It just didn’t make sense to me.
I watched as her breathing slowed, loving every breath that she inhaled. It meant that my Princess was well, uninjured. I didn’t know what would happen to me if something like what had happened in Gorilla City ever happened again. If something horrible ever happened, to hurt her, I wouldn’t be able to live. And if she actually died…
I couldn’t even bring myself to think the horrible thoughts that came next.
And what would happen if some criminal found out how much I cared for her? I had discussed the possibility with Diana once, but she had refused to listen to me. She was the only other person I had ever loved, besides Alfred and my parents. And my parents had been killed. If Diana…
“I love you, Diana,” I mumbled, speaking so softly that I was sure that she wouldn’t be able to hear me. I watched with a strange spasm of surprise as her lips moved into a small smile, and her eyelids fluttered back open. She had heard me. I didn’t know if I should be glad or not for this fact.
“My mother was wrong about at least one of the men in this world,” she murmured, nestling herself into the crook of my arm. I gratefully wrapped my arm the rest of the way around her shoulders, heart pounding loudly against the inside of my chest. It felt like everything was glowing, the birds singing even louder.
It was a strange feeling for Batman, the cowled vigilante.
